Aging Flower Project - Amaryllis

We love to see beautiful flowers at their peak. I post photos of them often on "A Bloom a Day." I've been wanting for years to create images of flowers past their prime and still find beauty. It's not easy looking at something dying. Nor is it popular. We don’t like to be reminded of our fading beauty.

Here's an example of my Mom's Amaryllis bloom I photographed at her home. She was so excited to have such a gorgeous flower blooming in her house. To preserve its memory, I set up a makeshift studio in her bathroom. Natural light beamed down on the flower from the skylight, and a black form core served as a backdrop.

A week later, I photographed the same flower fading away. It was my chance to capture an aging flower’s beauty. The following photo is one of my favorite shots. I found the translucency of the petals alluring, and the way they draped were so graceful- like a veil.
