I’ve been feeling the heaviness of the world lately. These are unsettling times with the uncertainty of the Covid-19 pandemic and the nightly protests and racial riots over the brutal police killing of George Floyd. It’s like I must wear a blanket of lead I can’t remove. I remember this feeling. It’s grief.

When I found a sunflower on my studio flower floor one day earlier this week, it’s condition reminded me of how I was feeling, droopy, and spent amongst the chaos. Without hesitation, I scooped it up and placed it on a fresh white canvas to photograph it. Just days later, I was inspired to make this art from the photograph.
